1900, Ziffer 30 Pfennig dunkelrotorange/schwarz als Zufrankatur auf Doppelkarte 2+2 Pfennig grau, als Einschreiben von "ULM 8 MRZ 02" nach Hankow, China, mit Ankunftsstempel des deutschen Postamtes, und zusammenhängend zurückgesandt als R-Karte vom chinesischen Postamt "HANKOW 21 APR. 02", frankiert mit China 1898, 4 Cents und 10 Cents, über das britische und französische Postamt von Shanghai nach München, mit nebengesetztem Rahmenstempel "PIROSCAFI ESTERI" und Transit-R-Zettel "Vom Auslande über Bahnpost Kufstein-München". Eine interessante und äußerst seltene Doppelkarte in ein nicht UPU- Mitgliedsland.

Am 1.4.1902 ging die württembergische Post in der Reichspost auf; Marken und Ganzsachen konnten noch bis zum 31.12.1902 im gesamten Reichsgebiet aufgebraucht werden.

1890, Doppelkarte 10 Pfennig von "DARMSTADT 9.2.97" nach Tanger und zusammenhängend als Einschreiben zurückgesandt, für die Einschreibegebühr frankiert mit Gibraltar 1889, 40 Centimos braunorange (unnötigerweise überfrankiert), mit sauber auf- und nebengesetztem "REGISTERED TANGIER 20 FE 97". Beide Teile mit längerem Text. Ein seltenes und interessantes Stück.

1867/84, Franz Josef 3 Kreuzer grün als (in diesem Fall unnötiges) Übersee-Ergänzungsporto auf Argentinien Antwortkarte 6 Centavos (die den Übersee-Zuschlag bereits enthielt) von "SALZBURG STADT 31 5 83" nach Buenos Aires mit vorderseitigem Eingangsstempel. Ein interessantes und seltenes Stück.

Nach Argentinien und in die niederländischen Kolonien betrug die Gebühr für Postkarten mit bezahlter Antwort von 1880-1886 3 Kreuzer mehr als nach anderen UPU-Mitgliedern; nach dieser Verordnung wurde hier frankiert.

1883, 10 Kreuzer im 3er-Block, mit EKr. "TRIEST 6 9 84" auf Briefkuvert nach Bangkok, geleitet über Udine (7.9.), Brindisi (8.9.), Neapel (11.9.), Brindisi (20.9.) und San Francisco (4.12.) mit nebengesetztem "MISSENT TO SAN FRANCISCO". Ein seltener Brief aus der bekannten Grassi-Korrespondenz.

 

1908/10, Kreidepapier ½ Piaster, Viererblock und Einzelwert, mit DKr. "CAIFA7/5 09" auf kompletter Paketkarte mit Coupon von "BURG BZ. MAGDEBURG 9.4.09" nach Beirut und nachgesandt nach Haifa.

 

EGYPT: “ALEXANDRIA 25 APR 78”, c.d.s. clear on Large Hermes Head 30 lepta brown, clear to large margins, on entire bank letter to Athens, with additional strike alongside. Very fine and scarce.

1904, 5 filler light green/black, two adhesives (one mostly torn off) tied by unclear cds dated 3rd March 1906 to small wrapper to Djibouti, treated as unpaid since Ethiopia was not yet a member of the UPU, and taxed upon arrival with blue crayon “T” and on reverse Ethiopia Postage Dues ½ gersch  vermilion pair, 2 gersch dark brown and 4 gersch lilac-brown, paying the domestic rate of 7 gersch and tied by cds “ HARAR 2 4 6”, some imperfections as to be expected, still fine, very scarce

Newspaper rate correctly paid at the country of departure, however invalidated upon arrival by a non-UPU member (Ethiopia joining on 1st November 1908)

1875, Alfonso 25 c. with cds. "CEUTA CADIZ 11 AGO 75" on cover to Urbino, Italy. Fine and scarce.

1890, Rechungsformular  “All'Agenzia del Lloyd Austro-Ungarico, oben mit blauem “AGENZIA DEL LLOYD AUSTRO-UNGARICO / JAFFA”, nebengesetzt “KAISERLICH DEUTSCHES VICE-CONSULAT IN JAFFA” (Bale CON-8) mit Unterschrift “S.S. Murad”, etwas verkürzt, gefaltet, sonst in guter Erhaltung

"AGENZIA DEL LLOYD AUSTRIACO ALEPPO" sauber auf unbezahltem kpl. Brief 1858 von "TRIESTE 19/2" nach Aleppo, taxiert mit "12" Kreuzern 

1863, Vorläufer 2 So. gelb, 3 So. grün und 10 So. blau, mit klarem EKr. "ALEXANDRIEN 14/7"(1864) auf kpl. Faltbrief nach Triest. Der Umschlag leicht gereinigt und Frankatur mit wenigen kleinen Zähnungsfehlern, sonst gute Erhaltung. Eine sehr attraktive und extrem seltene 3-Farben-Frankatur. Signiert Enzo Diena mit Attest (1991)

 

 

Puerto Cabello Steam Ship Co, 1866, two 2r green singles, rouletted 9 x 9.5, one in distinctly darker shade, each tied by Caracas double circle to folded entire to Bordeaux, France, France, paying the rate for 15g carried via the United Kingdom, lower adhesive further tied by blue oval Montamat & Adoue commercial handstamp, endorsed “voie d’Angleterre”, struck with British “G B / 1F60c” accountancy mark, “ANGL AMB CALAIS” (28 Feb) entry mark on front, adjacent “8” (decimes) due marking, backstamped Paris (1 Mar), Paris a Bordeaux (1 Mar), and Bordeaux c.d.s. backstamps, horizontal fold through lower adhesive, else a fine and rare double rate entire, signed Lamy, with 1989 Holcombe certificate.

1871, 25 c. blue, fresh colours, tied by GC “5104" SHANGHAI alongside red cds “PAQ. ANG. V. BRIND A. MOD 25 mai 72” (Salles-Nr. 1895) to printed matter sent to Lyon, dated inside “Shanghai, 11 avril 1872”, no arrival, extremely fine. A lovely and most unusual usage via the Brindisi route, certificate Scheller (2025)

PETERBURG 11 DEC 1891” to reverse of a registered envelope to Nagasaki, Japan, addressed to the “care of the Russian Consul, Imperial Russian frigate staff surgeon”, endorsed on front “Via Brindisi”, reverse transit cds “HONG KONG FE 11 92” and arrival mark “NAGASAKI 6 FEB 1892 JAPAN”, very fine and most unusual, in addition two registered covers from Vladivostok to either Hakodate or Nagasaki. 1889, 2 k. emerald-green, five singles tied by cds “MITAVA 15 FEV. 1893” to reverse of registered 10 k. blue postal stationery envelope to Malang, Java with reverse transit “SEMARANG 10 4 1893”, “TOEREN 12 4 1893” and arrival mark “MALANG 12 4 1893”, mostly very fine, in addition a registered 5 k. postal stationery from “PERNOV LIFL. 1 APR. 1897” to Weltevreden (minor usual toning) and a registered 10 k. postal stationery registered envelope with “PETERBURG 24 IX 1894” to Samarang without arrival mark. A very scarce trio

“SHANGHAI POST OFFICE 15 I 1900” large cds (T&S type 1), two fine strikes on “KITAI” 1 k., 2 k., 7 k. and 10 k. to reverse of registered envelope to Germany with transit cds “HONG KONG” and arrival cds “HAGEN 17. 2. 00”, repeated on front with red registration label in English language “I(mperial).R(ussian).P(ost).O(ffice) / Shanghai, China. N°4 R”, trace of one adhesive taken off probably before sending (as the franking pays the correct rate), very fine. A rare use of the registration label and attractive early mail from the Russian Post Office at Treaty Port of Shanghai

“CHEEFOO 20 IX (18)99” large cds (T&S Type 1, Gregorian calendar), superb strike on “KITAI” 10 k. horizontal pair with adjacent framed “R Tchéfou, Chine N°. 254” to registered envelope to Austria, re-addressed to Bohemia, reverse transit Russian cds “SHANGHAI 10 SEP. 1899” (T&S Type 2, Julian calendar), “HONG KONG SP 29 99” and arrival cds, endorsed on back flap “Imperial Russian Post Master”, very fine. A remarkable cover, probably the earliest registered mail from the Russian Post Office at the Treaty Port of Cheefoo (opened 1896) and an extremely scarce registration mark 

“KYAKHTA ZABAIK(AL) OB(LAST) TEL(EGRAPH) OFF(ICE) 26 XI 1908”, blue cds. on 4 k. repeated alongside on photocard to the Great Northern Telegraph Corporation in Shanghai with adjacent arrival cds. “SHANGHAI POSTE RUSSE 21 12 08”, the card with one minor peripheral tear of no importance, very fine, also an unused scenic postcard of the city of Kyakhta. Located at the Mongolian border, the post office of Kyakhta was supposedly transferred to nearby Troitskosavsk, and continued solely as a telegraph office. An extremely rare item

(Hellrigl type 2), tying Romanov 7 k. pair (one stamp teared at top before posting) to reverse of a registered envelope to Chita with arrival cds., on front a superb departure strike and the very rare registration label in Russian “Z N°660 Troitskosavsk Zabailkalskoy Obl.” (Hellrigl type 5), still fine and rare, the serial “g” on the postmark is unrecorded by Hellrigl

1890, "POSTAHANE-I BAGDAD 99" all arabic cancellation on envelope bearing 1 piaster on 2 piaster Bagdad provisional issue with arrival mark "POSTAHANE-I HANEKIN 95" on front, tiny shortened at left and crease, otherwise fine, attractive cover showing very clear cancellations, scarce

1870, ACHETOURA (Chetora): Duloz 20 para brown bisect diagonally on envelope front tied by "ASTURA" (Coles-Walker 82, A&P Type 04, no.6, RRR*) all arabic type cancellation. In A&P catalogue on cover unrecorded. Unique item addressed to Beyrouth, an important rarity of Turkey and Lebanon

1875, AL-BAZOURIYAH: 1 pia. yellow on folded envelope tied by "SHAM 81" (Coles-Walker No.31), transit mark all arabic BEZOURYE 288 (Coles-W. unrecorded, A&P No.1, RRR), addressed to Beyrouth, file fold, otherwise fine, very scarce Turkey and Lebanon forerunner

1894, BRUMANA: 1 pia. blue three stamps on registered envelope, two tied by "BRUMANA POSTA SUBESI" (Coles-Walker No.75, AP Type 04, no.1,RRR) all arabic type cancellation, one stamp tied by BEYROUTH c.d.s., transit “LIGNE N PAQ. FR.  No.3 2/2/94” on front and arrival mark BERLIN 21.294, tiny spot and some flaw on front and border, according to A&P less than five recorded, very clear cancellations, This cover is shown in Coles Walker catalogue 

1906, DERA 20/6/06 bilingual c.d.s. on postcard to France bearing 1905 issue 20 para on front, clear cancelled, on reverse Malain 1/7/06 arrival mark. Fine and scarce (Coles & Walker no.50)

1938/39, George VI. ½ a., 4 copies, tied to reverse of cover to Tchahbahar, underpaid by ½ a. and taxed on arrival, franked with 2 copies Iran 1938, 50 d., tied by Tchahbahar cds.; a very rare combination cover

SINGAPORE: 1859, double rate entire letter, dated inside "Bangkok den 28. März 1859", showing on front red oval forwarding agent mark "PICKENPACK, THIES & Co. BANGKOK SIAM" and on reverse "BEHN, MEYER & Co. SINGAPORE". In Singapore correctly franked for the conveyance to Alexandria with 2 copies India 1856/64, 8 annas carmine, tied by somewhat indistinct "B172" of Singapore with matching red dispatch mark on reverse. The prepaid amount corresponding to "2/-" noted on front in red crayon, crossed out, and "40" kreuzer due (consisting of 22 kreuzer sea postage from Alexandria to Trieste and 18 kreuzer German postal union postage), which was to be paid by the recipient. One stamp some minor creasing without any importance. A very fine and rare early letter from Thailand to Europe. Certificate BPA (2023) stating an incorrect franking, which is nonsense.

1860 (February 8), (3c) black on blue, with pen stroke through “UN REAL” indicating revaluation, large margins on three sides, touched at lower left, affixed to Hermanos correspondence folded cover to Goya, cancelled in manuscript, light vertical filing fold clear of stamp, a fine and uncommon franking. 

1891, Julius Popper's private mail service, 10c carmine red, upper right corner block of eighteen from the sheet of 100 subjects, showing inscription in upper selvedge, mint never hinged, one stamp with gum slightly disturbed, else light gum wrinkles as commonly found, fresh and fine, with various research notes accompanying.

1861, Third London printing, 20 c. green, fresh colour and good margins all around,, used with large part "CANCELLED" obliterator handstamps in black, tiny thin, otherwise fine and very rare, certificate Sociedad Filatelica de Chile (2023)

Note: 1861. Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond Hill On 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.: “My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...” He added on 24 April: “... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...” On 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter: “Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.” It turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority. Ormond Hill was not asked to return the „specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property. Nevertheless, the case destroyed Perkins Bacon as future printers for the Crown Agents. 1940, card 4 c. used from Shanghai with both sides printing “German radio station XGRS Shangai… Heil Hitler…Greetings from Berlin…from the German shortwave transmitter….” (dated Berlin 26.8.42) to Canton with arrival mark on front. Extremely rare radio message to China, at that time the only possibility of postal traffic, fine
