1853, 9 centesimi light blue, in combination with Modena 1852, 5 cents green, with dot after figure, both of fine colour and with good to mostly large margins, tied to first page of newspaper "Messaggere di Modena" of October 24, 1853. A rare and most attractive complementary mixed franking, of which only very few examples have been recorded. Certificate Sorani (2002)

After the revolutions of 1848 Austria and a couple of northern Italian states instituted a tax to be collected on incoming foreign newspapers to discourage their import.

1859, ½ Bajocchi on yellow, vertical pair, slightly touched at top, otherwise clear to large margins, with parts of two neighbours stamps at left, tied by grid to reverse of pricelist from "FAENZA 30 OTT. 59" to Russi. The entire was mailed unfranked, taxed upon arrival and stamps applied on reverse as receipt. Signed Alberto Diena and Vaccari.

1867, Vittorio Emanuele 20 centesimi blue, used with diamond of dots on postal stationery card 10 centesimi brown from “COMO 27…74” to Karlsruhe, Germany, fine. A scarce usage at the letter rate from the Pre-UPU period

1877, Vittorio Emanuele 10 centesimi blue, tied by c.d.s. "FIRENZE FERROVIA 26 3 78" to postcard 10 centesimi,  to New Haven, United States, with New York arrival mark. Slight creasing, not affecting the franking. A scarce early usage to overseas; this rate ceased as of April 1st, 1879..

1879, reply part of double card 15 + 0 centesimi, unused, showing on front clear c.d.s. "COLOMBO PAID DE 11 79" and on reverse large crowned handstamp "POSTMASTER GENERALS OFFICE CEYLON DE 11 1879". This item was sent by Ceylon authorities to the UPU at Berne as evidence in its complaint against Italy, sending reply cards to non-UPU-members. A unique item from the Ex-UPU-archive.

1878/79, 10 centesimi blue, two copies, one with rounded corner, tied by barred "234" with adjacent "ALESSANDRIA D'EGITTO POSTE ITALIANE 20 OTT. 79" to cover to Florence with arrival mark. A fine and scarce franking with special “Restricted Postal Union” rate of 20c at the domestic Italian rate.

1858, Franz Joseph 5 Sld. rot, farbfrisch, sauber mit EKr. “PADOVA 2 11” auf kleiner Faltbriefhülle nach Bagna Cavallo in der Provinz Ravenna, dort nicht zustellbar, eine urspünglich rotierte Nachtaxe gestrichen, handschriftlicher Vermerk "Pagato importo" angebracht und mit Sardinien 20C. blau frankiert und ab “BAGNA CAVALLO 4 NOV 60” retour gesandt, vorderseitig Ra2 “P Stato Pontificio”, rückseitig Transit- und Ankunftsstempel von Padova, die 5 Sld. durch Randklebung etwas beschädigt, ein sehr attraktiver und seltener Brief, Fotoatteste Bottachi (2023) und Ferchenbauer (2025)

"BERGAMO 27/7" (1859), EKr., klar auf waagerechtem Paar Sardinien 10 Centesimi, auf Briefhülle nach Mailand. Der rechte Wert kleiner Kratzer, sonst einwandfrei. Ein seltener Brief während des Befreiungskrieges. (Sassone 13 Punkte)

"CASALPUS/TERLENGO 16. APR.E", L3, auf 1858, 5 Soldi und (rückseitig geklebt) 10 Soldi, beide Type I, die 10 Soldi zusätzlich entwertet durch L1 "RACCOMANDATA", auf recommandiertem Faltbrief nach Mailand. Sehr selten und attraktiv. (Sassone R1)

"MANTOVA", Ra ohne Datum, jeweils sauber abgeschlagen als zusätzliche Entwertung auf Österreich Maschinenpapier 6 Kreuzer braun und 9 Kreuzer blau, mit EKr. "OLMÜTZ 13/5" Vorder- bzw. rückseitig auf eingeschriebener Briefhülle (unterer Teil der Vorderseite und 2 Seitenklappen fehlend), nach Modena und offensichtlich mehrfach nach-bzw. zurückgesandt mit 4 Ankunftsstempeln von Molina zwischen dem 17. Mai und 14. Juli. Ein – trotz der Beschädigung – interessanter und außerordentlich seltener Brief mit auf Marken äußerst seltenem Stempel. Mehrfach signiert, Fotoattest the Alberto Diena (1974) Raybaudi (1976) und Ferchenbauer (2011)

Grande frammento affrancato per 9 Kr. (Austria) ed un 6 Kr. al verso diretto a Modena, annullato in transito con il bollo in cartella di “Mantova” normalmente usato per le ricevute. Inusuale.

1688, entire letter from Livorno from Lyon to “Venturini e Vernaccia” in Livorno, together with two entires letters from the same correspondence from Napoli dated 1700 and 1702 respectively, both taxed on arrival

1852, Papal coat of arms ½ black on violet-gray, block of 10 from the upper right sheet corner with gutter at left, wide margins all around, the upper 5 stamps “otto filetti”, used with clear grill cancel, vertical crease between 3. and 4. vertical row, small creases, one stamp shallow thin, minor aging, otherwise fine, a very attractive and scarce multiple (Sassone 1A)

1852, Papal coat of arms ½ black on violet-gray, horizontal strip of four, fresh color, touched in places, tied by grill to folded lettersheet with adjacent cds. “TERRACINA 2 GUI 67” and cachet of the papal delegation of Velletri, to Maenza, attractive entire, signed Vespermann BPP with certificate and certificate A. 2 b. olive green, clear to good margins, tied to folded letter from Rome to Foligno by lozenge grid cancel, struck with black tax mark and affixed with 1863 10 c. yellow vertical pair Postage Due of Italy, partially obscuring Roma despatch c.d.s., reverse with 25 Mar c.d.s. receiver in red, trivial light edge toning, fine-very fine, signed Alberto Diena.

1852, 1 s. rose carmine, ample or better margins all around, centrally-struck with black lozenge grid cancel, some light uniform soiling, but a very fine centered example. (Michel 11)

1867, Papal coat of arms on glossy paper 2 c. on green, horizontal strip of five with gutter between 3rd. and 4th stamp (separating group III and IV), fresh color and good margins all around, tied by cds. “TOSCANELLA 12 AGO 68” to folded letter to Vetralla, left stamp minor corner crease, otherwise a very fine and rare entire, with only three gutter pairs on cover known, a.o. signed E. 1867, 5 c. greenish blue, “interspazio” horizontal pair, tied to 1868 folded cover to Montaldo di Castro by mute segmented lozenge of the Rome-Ceprano railway, with corresponding c.d.s. (3 Aug) on reverse, further backstamped with framed “Genazzano” and partial c.d.s., right stamp with light crease, heavily horizontal file hold, but a rare franking, signed Maurizio Raybaudi-Massilia and others, with 2005 Bottacchi certificate. The first specimen presents the variety “double t,” small repair but of fresh and very fine appearance, a rarity, illustrated and described in “The Stamps of Maurice Burrus, Old Italian States” (pages 23/24).
