Dr. Gray (1800–1875) was an eminent naturalist and keeper of the zooloogical collection at the British Museum. His catalogue was the third English philatelic catalogue following Booty's and Brown's earlier publications and the most scientific of the early publications in its treatment and classification of stamps.
